When people hear the word “therapy”, it often comes with a mix of curiosity, hesitation, and unfortunately misconceptions. As a practicing psychotherapist with over 18 years of experience, I’ve seen countless individuals delay their healing journey because of myths about therapy sessions that simply aren't true.
Let’s bust the most common therapy myths and help you understand what really happens in a therapy session.
Myth 1: Therapy Is Only for “Serious Mental Illness”
Truth: Therapy is for anyone seeking clarity, emotional balance, or personal growth.
Whether you're dealing with anxiety, relationship challenges, work stress, or simply feeling stuck, therapy offers tools to process your emotions and build resilience. You don’t need a diagnosis to benefit from therapy.
Myth 2: The Therapist Will Judge You
Truth: A therapy session is a judgment-free zone.
As a therapist, my role is to listen, support, and guide not to label or criticize. Everything shared is treated with compassion and confidentiality. In fact, emotional safety is the foundation of effective therapy.

Myth 5: You Must Talk About Your Past
Truth: You decide what you want to explore.
While the past can provide context, therapy focuses on what matters to you. Whether it's managing today’s stress or preparing for tomorrow’s challenges, we meet you where you are without forcing
Myth 3: You Just Vent It’s Like Talking to a Friend
Truth: Therapy goes far beyond venting.
A trained therapist uses structured methods and evidence-based approaches (like REBT, CBT, or Bach Flower Therapy) to help you reframe thoughts, manage triggers, and heal at a deeper level. While talking is part of the process, it’s guided with intentional direction and purpose.
Myth 4: One Session and You’ll Be “Fixed”
Truth: Therapy is a journey, not a quick fix.
Real, sustainable change takes time. Depending on your goals, you may need a few sessions or several months of work. But the transformation is worth it—many clients report long-term improvements in self-awareness, relationships, and emotional wellbeing.
So, What Actually Happens in a Therapy Session?
Here’s a peek into what to expect:
Warm, welcoming space either in-person or online
A gentle conversation to understand your goals
Use of therapeutic tools like guided introspection, mindfulness, or flower remedies (if relevant)
A collaborative approach you lead the pace, we guide the process
Sessions are confidential, compassionate, and customized to your needs
If you’ve been holding back because of fear or misinformation, I encourage you to take the first step. Therapy is not about being “broken” it’s about being brave enough to grow.
Let’s replace hesitation with healing, and myths with meaningful progress.
